What is "GO GARRETT GO?"

GO GARRETT GO is a fund raising initiative where people are being asked to pledge a dollar amount for every touchdown Garrett either throws to someone (he's the quarterback) or scores himself during the spring 2010 Ontario Minor Football League (tackle) season as a member of the Halton Cowboys Atom team(Atoms are those players born in 1999 or 2000).

The season runs from mid May through to the first week of August - with each team playing 7 or 8 regular season games (the final schedule is not out until mid April) plus one to three playoff games - so the total season could have between 9 to 11 games. These 9 to 11 games are the games for which Garrett's "touchdown count" takes place and for which pledges are raised. For some perspective, last season Garrett scored 10 touchdowns while playing in 5 games (he averaged two touchdowns per game played). It should be tougher to score this year, as it is each year as the boys get older and bigger. How many will he score this year? Who knows - but if he plays ten games, 10-15 touchdowns would be a reasonable guess.

For example if Garrett gets pledges amounting to $500 for every touchdown and he throws 5 touchdowns and scores 10 touchdowns (for a total of 15 touchdowns), then he would raise $500 x 15 = $7,500. If you donated $1 per touchdown then you would donate $1 x 15 touchdowns = $15 at the end of the season.

100% of all donations go directly to Childrens Miracle Network (the hospital of the donors choice ie: SickKids Toronto - Garrett's choice since he was a patient there) or Free the Children, which is partnering with organizations in Haiti to provide emergency relief and to support rebuilding efforts in the months to come.

Why is Garrett doing this?

Three years ago (he was 7 at the time) in the early hours of the morning on December 25th, Garrett suffered a severe seizure. He had no prior history of seizures. He was rushed to Oakville Trafalgar Hospital where he was non-responsive for four hours. Soon after he became responsive he had another seizure and at that point it was determined that he should be moved to SickKids Hospital in Toronto. After transferring to SickKids Garrett stabilized and was hospitalized for about a week. The doctors determined that a virus attacked Garrett which his system simply did not like, causing the epileptic seizure. While they believed the series of seizures was caused by a "one-time" event (this wonky virus) - no chances were being taken and he was put on anti seizure medication for 2 years.
